Herb Morrison werd wereldberoemd met zijn radioverslag van de crash van de Hindenburg op 6 mei 1937 bij Lakehurst Naval Station in New Jersey. Zijn woorden zijn niet live uitgezonden. Pas de volgende dag kreeg Amerika het emotionele verslag te horen:

,,It's crashing. It's crashing terrible. Oh my, get out of the way, please. It's bursting into flames. And it's falling on the mooring mast. All the folks agree this is terrible, one of the worst catastrophies of the world. Oh, the flames, four or five hundred feet in the sky, it's a teriffic crash ladies and gentlemen. The smoke and the flames now and the frame is crashing to the ground, not quite to the mooring mast. Oh, the humanity and all the passengers.''

Na de ramp ontbood Adolf Hitler de directeur van Zeppelin Luftschiffbau. ,,Doktor Hugo Eckener !'' schreef Hitler. ,,Die Art der Geschehniße in den letzten zwei Tagen macht es unumgänglich, daß Sie sofort nach Berlin kommen.(..) Es handelt sich um den Tod, den Ihr Nachfolger, Kapitän Ernst Lehmann, in diesem unerklärlichen tragiachen Unglück gefunden hat.''
