Wim Kok (1938) is a sober social democrat whose personal popularity exceeds that of his party. A former trade union leader, he became leader of the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) in 1986. Between 1994 and May 1998, he led the first cabinet since 1917 not to include the Christian democrats.
